The Victoria Cup is an ice hockey tournament scheduled to be held annually as a single game or as a series of ice hockey games.
The single game, or the series of games, will be played between professional ice hockey teams from:
- Europe (members of the International Ice Hockey Federation),
- North America (members of the NHL - North American National Hockey League).
The ice hockey tournament is called the Victoria Cup after the name of the Victoria Skating Ring from Montreal, Canada. It was there that the first recorded ice hockey game was played on 03 March 1875.
That is the reason for naming this ice hockey competition as "Victoria Cup".
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced the Victoria Cup in 2007, stating that the cup will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the IIHF.
The first Victoria Cup event will occur in 2008 as a single game between the following:
- the ice hockey team winner of the 2008 European Champions Cup,
- an NHL ice hockey club.
The Victoria Cup is an annual ice hockey event. Therefore, it will be organized on a per-year basis, with the first Victoria Cup tournament being held in 2008.
The next Victoria Cup tournaments will be held as a competition featuring teams from the European Champions Hockey League versus teams from the NHL.
The ice hockey team winner of the Victoria Cup will receive a money prize of 1,000,000 Swiss francs (approx. 959,000 USD).
